MONITORING RESEARCH – 7 MHZ

MONITORING RESEARCH – 7 MHZ

Sunspot activity is now the lowest for the present Cycle (No.24) – the 10.7 cm Solar Radio Flux has fallen to 71, and the Daily Equivalent Smoothed Sunspot Number has dropped to 19.

This means that long-haul, multi-hop transmissions over darkness or semi-darkness paths will be unreliable on OWFs (Optimum Working Frequencies) above 14 MHz, or MUFs (Maxiumum Usable Frequncies) above about 15 MHz.

Here in Melbourne, it is autumn, and sunrise is later, and sunset is earlier, each day, as we move towards winter.

The 6, 7, and 9 MHz bands are heavily congested in the UTC time span 1700 to 2200, dominated by transmissions intended for primary reception in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

This is a summary of notable frequency 7 MHz occupancies in the UTC window 1930 to 2000 on April 24, 2014, pre-sunrise in Melbourne.
